A Monroe, Louisiana police officer died following an on-duty crash early Sunday morning.

Troopers were called to the scene at South Second and Winnsboro Road in Monroe shortly before 3 a.m. after Officer Chris Beaudion was involved in a single-vehicle wreck, according to The News Star.

Beaudion was driving his department assigned Ford Crown Victoria when he veered to the left before his vehicle traveled across both northbound lanes and hit a tree.

The 26-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner's Office.

"Our prayers and deepest condolences are extended to his wife and two children along with his parents, family and friends," a statement from the police department reads. "He will greatly be missed."

Beaudion began his career with the Monroe Police Department on Aug. 4, 2016.

"This is a very tragic and sad day for the Monroe Police Department and the entire City of Monroe," Mayor Jamie Mayo said. "We ask the community to join us in prayer for the family of Officer Chris Beaudion. His wife, children, family and loved ones need our kindest thoughts and support."

The Louisiana State Police is investigating the cause of the crash with the assistance of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office.
