A United States Border Patrol Agent was struck and killed on a highway while assisting the Texas Department of Public Safety Saturday night.

Agent Donna Doss was hit by a passing vehicle just west of Abilene, on the south service road of I-20 near mile marker 276 around 8:15 p.m. as she helped determine a subject's alienage during a traffic strop, according to KTAB-TV.

The Abilene Police Department is assisting in the investigation of the incident, which remains under investigation.

"We have been in contact with all involved agencies, both that night and again today." Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge said in a statement. "APD used its drone to assist DPS with aerial photography today. We will provide any and all services that might be asked of APD."

The 49-year-old agent, who served with the Border Patrol for nearly 16 years, was walking across the access road when she was struck and killed by a 79-year-old driver.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
